What is Kuman Thong?

Legend of Kuman Thong

Derived from the tragic story of a famous poet living in Thailand in the 19th century - Sunthon Phu recounted in his work, the novel Khun Chang Khun Phaen. 

In the story, Khun Phaen was a talented young general who was very close to the king, and also received the favor of a powerful sorcerer in the kingdom. 

The witch loved Khun Phaen so much that he decided to marry his beloved daughter for him.

Unfortunately, just a short time after Khun's beautiful wife became pregnant, his relationship and father-in-law began to crack. The cause comes from disagreements and conflicts increasingly in helping the king run the country. 

The culmination of the incident was when the evil witch decided to attempt to harm her son-in-law. He instigated the daughter to poison the newly married husband. But the incident was discovered by Khun Phaen, and a more gruesome tragedy originated from it. 

The madness of being betrayed plus the vengeful desire to burn the mind, Khun Phaen turned into evil. With the bloody fetus in his hand, Khun ran to the sacred temple, burned a large bonfire and placed that little body on the iron plate, after wrapping it in a piece of sacred cloth with prayers.

 Khun Phaen prayed all night, while the fire and iron plate dried the tiny baby. The morning after the barbaric ritual was completed, the soul of the poor child turned into a ghost, a "guardian angel" that followed guard and brought luck to the person who killed it .

That is the source of the kuman thong - the most mysterious and macabre spell in the world.

From legend to truth

Kuman Thong is the common name for small statues made of bronze or ceramic, shaped like a baby with a smiling face. But the Kuman Thong statue is said to have a certain source of strength due to being built by the monks in the pagodas to pray for those who possess them to have good health and bring back the lucky thing ... 

However, these statues are often sold in markets, souvenirs or near temples in Thailand. Although called Kuman Thong, they are not the same as the original version. In Thailand, the belief in Buddhism is something that cannot be undone, so based on this point, the Kuman Thong statue produced with economic purpose is primarily and partly spiritual. It is not due to the enchantment of the body or the body of the fetus.
